25: The Night Shift

Kyne couldn’t overcome his odd mood. He imagined that he should feel better. Marcus had been able to find a suitable village to take the Blue Cross refugees. Eileen had managed to make several vials of the potions she thought they might need, although she did point out that there were many more she wished she could make if she only had the right ingredients.

And there were a few more that she was experimenting with even though she wasn’t yet sure of their effects. He wasn’t sure if that made him feel better about the next leg of their journey or more worried.

Regardless, he didn’t know why he was in a bad mood. Everything seemed to be going well. At least, as well as it could go since they had left Wyheath. They had already overcome several problems. And now they were about to embark on a much more dangerous path: facing down the pirates that had made a solid base out of the ruins he and Eileen had infiltrated weeks earlier.

Perhaps he should feel the excitement. Or fear. Or maybe even worry. But none of these seemed to be able to penetrate the melancholy that had overcome him. He was in a mood, and he was having a hard time bringing himself out of it.

What had helped him feel better the last few weeks? His stomach was full. Nerwenye and Sigber had managed to make a rather good meal out of the potatoes he and Gertha had found and the fish Nerwenye had caught in the underground spring. It even tasted good, seasoned with their limited supply of herbs and spices. Nerwenye appeared to live off of the most limited form of spices and supplies. The elf hardly ate at all. She seemed to be humoring them at every meal that they ate together.

Then he noticed something.

“Where’s Eileen?” he asked.

The people around the table looked around at each other. Lillian was the first to speak.

“I thought she said she was going to explore,” she said.

“Outside?” Kyne asked.

“Of course not,” Sigber said. “It’s nearly night, and the door is closed!”

“She wanted to explore the temple?” Nerwenye asked. “What’s left to explore?”

“The four passages, I suppose,” Gertha said.

The woman looked over her shoulder. Then she looked back at her food. She seemed to shake herself.

“Does anyone else feel off? I don’t quite feel right.”

Kyne stood. So he wasn’t the only one. Something about this knowledge heightened his senses. Something was wrong.

“What potions were you two working on?” he asked Nerwenye.

Looking over at the table, he saw that there were several potions still bubbling away. Perhaps they were beginning to mix in the air? Slowly, Nerwenye stood to her feet and walked over to the potions. She capped each of them and took them off the fires.

The change was nearly instantaneous.

As soon as the bottles were capped, Kyne felt better. Like he could feel and sense again. His emotions that had been dulled were coming back to life. Something about the potions had messed with his mind.
